Early Life and Education

Phil McGraw was born on September 1, 1950, to Joseph J. McGraw Jr. and his wife Anne Geraldine “Jerry” (née Stevens) in Vinita, Oklahoma.

He grew up in the North Texas oilfields alongside his two older sisters, Deana and Donna, and younger sister Brenda where his father worked as an equipment supplier.

Phil McGraw began working at the age of 13 at a Pizza Planet franchise and an A&W Root Beer stand in Oklahoma City.

As his father pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a psychologist, McGraw relocated to Kansas with him. In Overland Park, Kansas, he studied at Shawnee Mission North High School.

He was a linebacker for his high school football team, and in 1968, he was awarded a football scholarship to play middle linebacker at the University of Tulsa for head coach Glenn Dobbs. Later, he changed to Wichita Falls, Texas’s Midwestern State University.

McGraw earned a B.A. in psychology from Midwestern State University in 1975. His dissertation, “Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Psychological Intervention,” was completed at North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas), where he also received an M.A. in experimental psychology in 1976 and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1979.

At the Wilmington Institute, he completed a year of post-doctoral forensic psychology training.

Career

Phil McGraw returned to his father in Wichita Falls, Texas, where the senior McGraw had started his own private psychology practice, after earning his PhD.

McGraw and his father collaborated with Texas businesswoman Thelma Box to create “Pathways” self-help workshops in 1985.

In October 1991, six years after joining Box, McGraw sold his $325,000 stake in the business.

McGraw and attorney Gary Dobbs co-founded Courtroom Sciences, Inc. (CSI) in 1990. Trial consulting company CSI offers services in jury selection, US litigation psychology, trial counseling, witness preparation, and depositions.

Oprah Winfrey engaged McGraw’s law firm CSI in 1995 to help her get ready for the Amarillo Texas beef trial. Winfrey was so taken aback by McGraw that she praised him for helping her prevail in the 1998 case.

She then invited him to come on her show shortly after. His presentation was so popular that, beginning in April 1998, he started making weekly appearances on Tuesdays as a relationship and life strategy guru.

McGraw established Peteski Productions in September 2002 and debuted his own syndicated daily television program, Dr. Phil, which was created by Winfrey’s Harpo Studios.

McGraw addresses a different topic on each episode of the guidance program Dr. Phil while giving counsel to his guests.
